Bradford police have been praised by safety experts after two men caught firing rocket fireworks from a car in a city street were fined hundreds of pounds.

PC David Hardcastle told Bradford magistrates how he saw a projectile come out of the window of a parked car in Great Horton Road last October.

It hit a nearby building and a second projectile struck the side of a terrace house.

He questioned the men in the car about what had happened and when he looked inside the vehicle he saw fireworks and boxes on the floor.

Amjad Bostan, 24, of Ellercroft Terrace, Lidget Green, Bradford, denied letting off fireworks in the street but was found guilty. He was fined £500 and ordered to pay £80 costs.

Philip Richie, 31, of Princeville Road, Bradford, pleaded guilty and was fined £300 with £30 costs.

The case against a third man, Amjad Hussain, 29, of Fernside Terrace, Bradford, was adjourned for a month. He has pleaded not guilty. PC Hardcastle said when told he was being reported for the offence, Bostan replied: "They fired at us, we fired back.''

The court ordered other fireworks seized during the incident be confiscated.

David Jenkins, product adviser to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, said: "We support and congratulate Bradford police for bringing these cases.

"Hopefully lessons will be learned by people who are contemplating such foolish and dangerous behaviour.

"Although the national accident figures for bonfire night went down last year, there were still more than 800 cases in which people required hospital treatment."
