Prince Charles has given the Royal seal of approval to a scheme to create a Millennium garden in Ilkley.

And best-selling author Jilly Cooper, who was educated in Ilkley, has promised to "move heaven and earth" to perform the official opening of the Darwin Gardens in June 2000.

Prince Charles wrote to the organisers of the scheme after he was contacted by team member Frazer Irwin.

Mr Irwin said: "I believe in going right to the top for help, support and advice. Even so, I was quite astonished when I received the letter of support."

In a letter to the Prince, he explained the team's dream of creating a lasting Millennium project in West View Park for future generations to enjoy.

He described how it would "re-generate a run down Edwardian park into an area of beauty, a haven for wildlife and a place to educate generations of today and the future, in countryside ways, history, art, religion and the sciences".

And rather than a cursory reply, Mr Irwin said the Prince wrote back recommending an association with expertise in organic horticulture and gardening.

"His interest has been a tremendous boost for the Darwin team," said Mr Irwin. "The Prince has visited Ilkley before and I hope it jogged some happy memories for him."

Mr Irwin has also contacted Jilly Cooper to invite her to perform the opening, planned for June 24, 2000.

The author of blockbusters such as Riders and Polo said in a letter: "I would love to do it. I'll move heaven and earth to be there."

The Darwin team is growing more confident about the scheme, particularly after receiving the official backing of Bradford Council.
