Controversial road signs at the entrances to Otley are to be changed - but there will still be no mention of Otley.

Councillors and residents have united against the large yellow and green "Welcome to Leeds" signs that are going up in Ilkley Road, Carr Bank, Ellar Ghyll and in Farnley Lane.

Following complaints, the Council has said it is going to change the tone of the £1,000 signs by adding the words "Leeds Metropolitan District".

But town councillor Nigel Francis said the changes were worthless.

"It's totally pointless and just a waste of space. They look like Butlins holiday camp signs," he said.

"They've not been put up for the locals because they know they're in Leeds, unfortunately, and anyone looking for Leeds would find it on a map and not be looking out for it on signs.''

Coun Francis said he had been inundated with telephone calls from people furious about the signs.

The City Council should have consulted parish and town councils before putting them up, he added.

Councillor Colin Campbell said the City Council had added insult to injury.

"The decision to ignore Otley has produced more controversy than almost anything else I can remember over the last few years,'' he said.

A spokesman for Leeds Council said the "Welcome to Leeds'' wording would stay and "Leeds Metropolitan District'' would be added to the bottom of the signs.

The Council is putting up between 40 and 50 of the signs at key points in the district, spending a total of £50,000.
