Yorkshire Cricket Development Officer Ian Dews, who is captain of York, stepped into the YCB XI team to help make up numbers in their NatWest Trophy first round match against the Gloucester-shire CB XI at Cheltenham yesterday - and helped them through to the second round by being joint top-scorer.

The YCB's overseas player, Lesroy Weekes, had to pull out late on Monday because of his daughter's illness and Lee Baxter from Slaithwaite also had to withdraw because of a finger injury.

Reserve Ed McKenna stepped in as well as Dews, who had picked the side, but they were hit by further bad luck when former Pudsey St Lawrence captain, Chris Gott, now with Skipton, went down with food poisoning soon after the match started and was ordered back to his hotel by a doctor.

Dews and Hanging Heaton batsman Alan Mynett both hit 37 as Yorkshire reached 145 and Gloucestershire were bowled out for 137 with eight balls remaining, Steve Foster from Gomersal taking the Man-of-the-Match gold award for his five for 26 which included three wickets in his first over coming on as first change.

"There was a brilliant atmosphere for the match and it was a fantastic result," said Dews.
