Burley had their neighbours Ilkley to thank for their encouraging victory over last year's champions Adel. Burley worked hard to get the game played and borrowed 'sponging' equipment from Ilkley to soak up water from the square and outfield.

Play started promptly and Adel started poorly and were 27-5 after 24 tight overs with Duncan Hurd claiming three victims and Nick Brook two.

Simon Wardley and S Howey brought about a recovery putting on 55 valuable runs and an aggressive knock from M Thomas (28) gave rise to an Adel score of 132.

Burley started steadily with openers Andrew Arundell and Duncan Hurd putting on 23 before Arundell went for five. David Brook, in at three, scored two sixes in his knock of 20 before he left with the score at 60. Ian Normington partnered Duncan Hurd for a further 33 runs when a mini-collapse arose with Nick Brook and Duncan Hurd soon joining him. Hurd's knock of 43 was patient and cultivated.

With victory in sight Richard Fleming and Jamie Davey took Burley to the edge of victory before Fleming lost his wicket leaving cousins Richard Brook and Jamie Davey to see Burley home to a well-deserved victory which signalled some optimism on their return to Division A.

Calverley opener Steve Alred hit a fine 55, which included 1 six and 4 fours, as his side totalled 162-8 at Silsden where the home side's Andrew Pullen bowled steadily for 4-56 off 16 overs. Silsden replied with 111-9 to draw being held in check by some steady Calverley bowling with Neil Waite taking 3-26 off 11 overs and Brian Wilson 4-39 off 20 overs.

Steeton gained a six wickets win over visitors Knaresborough with their Australian batsman Matthew Pinniger making a solid 44 as they knocked off Knaresborough's 111 in a match reduced to 27 overs a side. Opener Stuart Carey struck 44 for Knaresborough and shared a stand of 66 with his fellow opener Australian Damien Meeley. Steeton got the winning runs with just four balls of the game to go.

The Division A matches between Guiseley and North Leeds, Beckwithshaw and Rawdon and Bilton and Hall Park were called off without a ball being bowled due to the wet state of the grounds.

Division B

In Division B Green Lane made a good start with a 29 runs win over Otley. Lane posted a score of 151-7 after losing early wickets to Robert Hodgeson but Garfield Williams steadied things with a knock of 44 on his return to the club after a spell with Horsforth. He shared a useful fifth wicket stand with Steve Hargreaves who made 39. Hodgeson finished a tidy spell with 3-39 off 15 overs.

Otley were then dismissed for 122 as Lee Bramham produced a spell of 4-29 off ten overs. Chris Smith was out without scoring but his young opening partner James Davies batted well for 33.

Menston picked up four points from their game at Collingham after notching a score of 196-7. Jeremy Smith plundered 64 runs in mid-innings to give his side a big boost after P Crosse had done some damage with a return of 5-67.

Smith was well supported by his new skipper Richard Taylor who made an unbeaten 32 as the pair shared a seventh wicket stand of 90.

Collingham hung on at 183-9 to take two points from the encounter, opener David Holmes having hit 53.
