The whole of Bradford today bombarded Valley Parade with messages of support on the eve of the biggest game the club has seen in 90 years.

City fans across the globe sent their good luck wishes as community leaders delivered a big vote of confidence.

Meanwhile pubs across the district were standing by to be besieged tomorrow afternoon when City take on Wolves in the final match of the season which will decide their fate.

A win would guarantee automatic promotion to the top flight of British football - but City could still go up with a draw or even by losing, depending on the scoreline of nearest rivals Ipswich who kick off at the same time against Sheffield United.

Bradford City chairman Geoffrey Richmond, said: "The club want to do it, most of all for the supporters. The supporters have been brilliant through bad times as well as good times.

"I honestly believe that we can do it and we will. We are under no illusions but we have to win one game of football to get into the Premier League and we can't ask for a better chance than that.

"Come Sunday we could see scenes of celebration in the city the like of which haven't been seen in living memory."

The Provost of Bradford, the Very Reverend John Richardson, said: "We've all got our fingers crossed for Paul Jewell and the team. We wish them well and look forward to a great night in the city on Sunday. Win, lose or draw it's been a great season."

And Bradford's Lord Mayor Councillor Tony Miller said: "Everybody in Bradford is rooting for them. It's just so important it's unreal. People don't realise how important it is, not just for the players but for the whole of Bradford because it will generate such a feelgood factor.

"But at the end of the day even if they don't pull it off we can still be proud of them."

The T&A's The Only Way Is Up! campaign has been taken into the hearts of people throughout the district, who are right behind City this vital weekend.

Supporters will be crowding into the city's pubs and clubs to watch the crucial match as it happens tomorrow afternoon. And living room curtains will be drawn throughout the district as families gathering in front of the TV.

Lifelong supporter 83-year-old Hubert Pountney, who was named JCT600/Telegraph & Argus Bradford City Supporter of the Year earlier this week, said: "Come on City! But whatever the result, whether we win or not, we are full of gratitude for the season we have had - it's brought so much enjoyment and pleasure."

The players' wives and girlfriends have organised a minibus and driver to take them to Molineux.

John Dreyer's wife Claire said: "On behalf of all of us we wish them all the very best and hope we succeed. We will be making plenty of noise."

Club chaplain the Reverend Martin Short is expecting a busy Sunday. "It's going to be a bit of a squeeze, getting to church and the match this Sunday, but well worth it. I was at QPR two weeks ago when the promotion tide turned in our favour and I'm hoping to have an even happier journey home this week."

Mohammed Amran, Commissioner for the Commission for Racial Equality, said: "I think it's going to be brilliant, because it will bring a lot of positive coverage and good publicity to Bradford. It's great for the club and great for the city of Bradford."

City fan Mark Williams, 34, who has chartered a luxury stretch limousine to take him and seven friends to Wolves, said: "It's going to be very tense but I'm predicting a 1-0 City win with Jamie Lawrence to score. The Only Way Is Up! without a doubt. We will have City scarves and flags trailing and we are bringing the champagne."

Mr Williams, from Queensbury, christened his four year old son Thomas Bradford Williams in honour of BCFC.

Gerry Sutcliffe, MP for Bradford South, said: "I wish them every success for Sunday. I am looking forward to a victory which will boost the morale of the city.

"Whatever happens they have done very well this season. But it will be nice to see them in the Premier League."

He will be at a cubs' event at Myrtle Park, Bingley, on Sunday. But he said: "I will have my radio glued to my ear!"
