Dignitaries in Ilkley have been warned not to expect the red carpet treatment when the town's college finally closes.

Students organising farewell celebrations at the Wells Road campus are delighted with the response from students, past and present, with more than 750 guests expected to join in a special party on Saturday, May 29.

But there will be no parish council representatives at the event.

Student chiefs deny the move is a snub but say no invitations will be sent to them because they are not relevant to the celebrations.

Kerrie McLauglan, president of Ilkley Student Union, is still unhappy with the parish council's perceived lack of support to save the college, and the general apathy shown by many people in the town about the college's demise - despite warnings that it will hit the town's economy.

A special meeting was organised in the Student Union bar last Thursday evening after Kerrie made a plea for stewards. But she said: "Not one person turned up. It was very disappointing."

The students are determined the event should be properly stewarded and had hoped that would have been an ideal way for Olicanians to play their part in the day's festivities - with the bonus of enjoying all the attractions on offer for free.

Friends and family of present students have now stepped into the breach to take up the posts on offer.

The Student Union says it is not bad mouthing the town, but is disappointed that no-one seems interested in sharing the farewell fun.

Despite some setbacks Mark Oliver, Student Union social secretary, said: "Preparations are going really well and we just hope that everyone has a great time."

Music spanning four decades will be played throughout the day, as well as numerous attractions for children and a display examining the college history.

Although the event is now barely two weeks away, student chiefs have made it clear there is still time for the community to play its part.
