A charity event held in aid of a Rawdon boy who suffers from a rare genetic disorder has raised more than £15,000.

Members of West Park Bramhope rugby union club staged the auction after a match in memory of Ben Draper's father, Lee.

The 36-year-old, a former player with West Park and Bramley, collapsed and died last August, just months after being diagnosed with heart disease.

He had a heart valve operation in December but collapsed at Headingley Golf Club in January.

Dozens of items, including rugby shirts, football shirts, free rounds of golf, and a year's membership at Wyke Ridge Golf Club in Leeds, were donated for the auction in aid of Ben.

The six-year-old suffers from Prader Willi Syndrome which affects 15,000 children in Britain. Sufferers have an insatiable appetite and could potentially eat themselves to death if their food intake is not properly controlled.

A memorial rugby union match before the auction drew crowds of more than 500 people and Ben was on hand to present a trophy in Lee's name to West Park and Bramley team captains Bob Collins and Brian Mulligan after the sides drew 20-20.

Lee's widow, Maggie, said: "It was a fantastic day. I think the most emotional part of it was realising that somebody you loved so much was well-liked by so many other people."

The auction itself raised around £6,000 and all together the day raised at least £15,000.

A signed England rugby union ball was given to Ben as a reminder of the day.

Mr Collins, who organised the match between West Park and Bramley, said: "I haven't seen as many people at the club for a long time. It was a fantastic tribute to Lee."
