at Ben Rhydding

CLUB president Richard Gilgrass was blessed with fine weather for President's Day at Ben Rhydding Golf Club on Sunday.

Seventy one players took part in ideal conditions for golf - a varied wind, beautiful fairways and perfect greens.

Ian Buchan was the clear winner with 42 points, three points clear of the rest. Clive Singleton was the nearest to the pin on the 8th and 17th holes. Trevor Lockwood won the longest putt at the 2nd and 10th holes.

The President held a presentation evening in a packed clubhouse and this was followed by a barbecue. His charity benefited to the tune of £250.

Also on Sunday D Chew and S Yeadon took part in the Bradford Chippendale Trophy area semi finals at Rawdon.

They both qualified for the 36 hole final at Shipley Beckfoot where they will meet Woodhall Hills on August 29.

President's Day results:

Division One - I Buchan 14-42; M Tipping 6-38; D Midgeley 10-37.

Division Two - R Marshall 27-39; I Clark 25-38.

Ilkley Golf

Club Ladies

Tony Nixon, the Ilkley Golf Club President, chose a Stableford competition played in teams of three two scores to count for his prize day for the ladies.

The winners were Irene Coates, Sue Hatfield and Judy Nixon with 79 points on the back nine from Pat Hopkinson, Pat Jolly and Ann Gillon.

Mr Nixon presented the winners with three millenium limited edition prints of the course by John Sibson and invited all the ladies to join him for a drink.

In the Edleston Trophy competition the winner in Division One was Liz Webster 85-17-68 and the runner-up was Maureen Schofield 86-14-72.

In Division Two the winner was Margaret Pack 101-27-74 and the runner-up was Sue Holroyd 98-22-76.

The two divisional winners played each other in the final and the winner of the Edleston Trophy was Margaret Pack 3 and 2.

The August Medal produced some good scores. The winner in Division One was Daphne Hawkins 87-17-70 . Second was Maureen Schofield 84-14-70 and third was Ann Newman 78-7-71. In Division Two the scores were even lower. The winner was Di Spratt 105-40-65, second was Jean Schofield 93-26-67 and third was Joyce Bennett 91-23-68.

On the match scene, the Scratch Team completed their season with six points, the A Team with seven points, but the B Team, who have produced excellent results throughout the season scored 11 points and qualified for the semi-finals at Dore and Totley Golf Club, Sheffield, on September 6.

Outside events continue to produce some excellent results. In the Hawksworth Silver Salver Competition the Scratch Team all played well to win by one point from Bingley St Ives. The winners were Linda Burrows 78, Ann Newman 78 and Marilyn Brand 80.

Ann Newman continues her excellent season, at the English Girls Championship at Chigwell Golf Club she was one of 32 qualifiers and then lost in the match play to Fame Moore who plays for England.

Ann has now been selected to play for Yorkshire Junior Girls in their match against County Durham.

At the Otley Golf Club Open Day Julie Ormondroyd and Margaret Pack with an excellent score of 70 were just beaten into second place on a count back with the eventual winners.

Rawdon teams

THE teams at Rawdon Golf Club have enjoyed a very successful year. The first team has won the Bradford Union Second Division Championship and will be promoted.

Also promoted are the 8s-15s team which topped Division Three. The juniors have also had an excellent season finishing as runners-up in the junior league.

Results of the August Stableford on Saturday were:

Division One - M Marston 46, E Shoard 45, H S Johnson 43.

Division Two - R Harland 45, T Morton 44, D Wilkin 42.

Ladies' Medal

Windy, dry weather made conditions difficult at Ben Rhydding Golf Club for the Ladies July Medal.

Winner Janette Mullan returned a creditable net 63 off her 80 handicap, eight shots clear of second placed Lynn Yeadon, with 96-25-71. Third was Helen Marshall,99-26-73, on last nine from fourth Mollie Place,97-24-73.

This Stableford competition played off seven eighths handicap produced some good scores and a close contest in warm, dry and humid weather conditions.

Results: 1, Mollie Place 37 points; 2, Linda Burton 36 points; 3, Cathy Lambert 35 points.

Copper club prize - Pamela Anderson 30 points.

Longest putt on 9th or 18th Margaret Beveridge, 31ft.

Club president, Dick Gillgrass, presented the winners with their prizes and thanked the ladies for the beautiful floral displasy in and around the clubhouse.

August Medal

THE Men's August Medal on Saturday had 149 entries producing excellent scores and several handicap reductions.

Division One: 1. P.Taylor (6) 65, 2. J.Smart (12) 65, 3. B.Cottle (12) 66.

Division Two: 1. P.Cullen (18) 63, 2. C.Vine (17) 65, 3. G.Swithenbank (17) 67.

Division Three: 1. M.Freeman (19) 67, 2. A.Paden (19) 68, 3. A.Stead (23) 69.

ACE PLAYERS

Two Holes-in-One have been achieved this week. On Thursday, in a Rabbits' friendly match against Selby, Alan Redhead scored his hole-in-one on the 15th hole, winning his match.

In the medal on Saturday Mark sample also scored a hole-in-one, also on the 15th hole.

LADIES' INVITATION

The Ladies' Invitation Day on Tuesday was enjoyed by 54 ladies and their guests.

The first three places were decided on the back nine scores. The results show the home players first followed by their guest.

1, E. Johnson & P. Horrick-Taylor (Ogden) -66; 2, N.Schofield & P.Green (Garforth) -66; 3, B.Wallace & E.Naylor (Bradford) -66; 4, N.Spence & P.Asker (Silsden) -67.

Lady Rabbits' Captain's Day had 26 entries with handicaps 28 to 45, in a 5 club competition.

1, M. Waite-Pullan (41points); 2, K. Kershaw (39 points, best back 9); 3, S.Hollingworth (39 points); 4, M.Cooper (37 points).

A Wilson was the winner in the 40 to 45 handicap group with 35 points.

Horsforth Am-Am

Horsforth Golf Club held its annual Am-Am. It attracted 196 players playing in teams of four. Initially £7,500 was raised but this sum has now risen to over £8,000.

This brings the total raised since 1991 to £78,000 with all the proceeds going to Cookridge Hospital for equipment and research into the treatment of cancer.

Mr Ian Rothwell attended the Prize Presentation in the evening to accept the cheque on behalf of Cookridge Hospital and gave his thanks for the tremendous effort of the Horsforth Golf Club and friends.
