A Yeadon charity is hoping Leeds planners will relent and let it stay put in its temporary accommodation.

The Yeadon Charities Association was told two years ago it must be out of the building in Cemetery Road by the new millennium.

But despite looking for new premises, the association has drawn a blank and is now hoping the city council will approve its application to stay on for another few years.

And it has pledged to smarten the building up and plant shrubs to make the whole site look more attractive.

Michael Rhodes, association president, said it would be disastrous if the planning application was turned down.

"It would be traumatic for us if we did have to move at the end of the year.

"We have looked around for somewhere else but there does not seem to be a suitable room in Yeadon.

"We are a Yeadon organisation and want to hold our meetings in the town, " said Mr Rhodes.

The association was originally given permission in 1991 to site the temporary building close to Yeadon Dam for just one year.

A year later, the permission was extended due to the good work done by the association, but the council stressed that alternative premises must have been found by next year and the site returned to its original state.

Mr Rhodes added that he did not believe the building looked insensitive in the area.

He said : "Next to our building is a steel container for storing ramps for skateboarding.

"I don't think that enhances the area and in addition, the boatyard at the dam is untidy. Shelters round the dam are also in a poor state," he said.

He said he was now looking into the possibility of holding their meetings at the nearby boys club but would prefer to stay where they were.
