AN Ilkley-based district commissioner for the Guide Association believes the organisation has a valuable role to play in the

current town debate on youth issues.

Ann Peacock, of Denton Road, the district commissioner for Rombalds, says young people were being catered for by the association, and learning a great deal in the process.

Mrs Peacock said trips involving the 1st Ilkley All Saints unit and the 2nd Ilkley with 1st Ben Rhydding group, showed an excellent example of youngsters and adults working together. Both had enjoyed outdoor adventures, with the latter group mixing with Scouts and Guides from Holland.

"The point is that the leaders of these units have a wealth of experience of working with young people. They listen to each other and together girls and leaders plan a programme of activities which is interesting, satisfying and instructive."

Mrs Peacock said not all the activities were of the outdoor, physical type.

"Major social issues are tackled with sensitivity and factual information is provided. The individual is given scope to develop spiritually and to care for the community and the environment," she said.

Mrs Peacock expressed disappointment that no member of the organisation had attended the last open meeting to address youth issues.

"The Guide Association is a voluntary youth association. As such it is a recognised part of the youth service and is a member of the British Youth Council. With this experience and local knowledge, I should have thought that leaders in this district would have a great deal to contribute to the discussions," she said.

Mrs Peacock said she would be happy to hear from anyone wanting to know more about Guiding. She can be contacted at 24 Denton Road, Middleton, Ilkley LS29 OAA.
