A constant flow of students drifted in and out of Holy Family school's foyer - some chattering excitedly, others leaving in silence, clutching the brown envelopes on which their futures depend.

Jennifer Nelson, 18, of Highfield, has just what she wanted - a C in Geography, D in Maths and E in Biology - enough for a combined Primary Education and Maths degree at Leeds Trinity & All Saints College.

"I didn't expect it - I was ready to go home crying, but it's exactly what I wanted," she says.

Davina Patel, 18 calmed down after opening her envelope. She says: "I initially needed 12 points, but I've got 16. I'm so relaxed now - I was really nervous before."

The vital points, made up of a B in Geography, C in English Literature and E in Biology, have got her a place at Leeds University to study Diagnostic Radiography.

Andrew Watts, 18, scored an A in Maths, B in Physics, C in Chemistry and D in Further Maths, enough for a Mechanical Engineering degree at Leeds University.

He says: "I'm pleased, because I've got where I wanted to go."

A degree in Business and Finance at Leeds University beckons 18-year-old Helen Barker of Riddlesden, who scored an A in Maths, Cs in Biology and Chemistry and a B in General studies.

"I am really pleased - it's just what I wanted," she says.

Top of the class, though, is Tom Fleming, 18, of Silsden, who has managed to obtain four A grades - in Chemistry, Further Maths, Maths and Physics - and a B in General Studies.

He says: "It was what I expected. I am just trying to take it in now."

When he has taken it in, he will embark on a Natural Sciences degree at Cambridge University.
