Day at Ilkley

ILKLEY Golf Club held their Lady Captain's Day, with Lorna Deakin choosing a medal round to mark her day and 53 ladies enjoyed glorious weather and playing golf in perfect conditions. The winner was Marilyn Brand with a three under par round 79-9-70.

In Division One the winner was Marjorie Bradley 89-18-71, second was Liz Webster 92-18-74 and third was Ann Newman 85-10-75. In Division Two the winner was Gill Bean 95-25-70, second was Margaret Pack 101-27-74 and third was Yvonne Thompson 108-33-75.

At the prize-giving the ladies enjoyed wine, canapes and strawberries and were joined by the club president, Tony Nixon, and Lorna's husband, Harry.

In the July Medal the winner in Division One was Ann Newman with an excellent score of 81-12-69, second was Sally Ognall 86-15-71. In Division Two the winner was new member Jackie Foster 93-22-71, second was Betsy Riley 106-33-73.

The winner of the Hole-in-One competition played at the same time was Sally Ognall (71) and runner-up was Pam Blackburn 91-19-72. In the final of the K Salver, Marilyn Brand beat Sally Ognall four and two.

On the match scene the B team won their two final home matches and now wait to see if they qualify for the finals. They beat Bedale 41/2-21/2 the winners were Liz Webster, Sue Hatfield, Jill Parfitt and Wendy Pillinger while Ann Gillon halved her match. They also beat Bridlington 6-1. The winners were Marjorie Bradley, Liz Webster, Jill Parfitt, Joyce Bennett, Wendy Pillinger and Maggy Mitchell.

In outside events, at the 1999 Yorkshire Challenge Bowl played at Forest Park Golf Club, the winners of the foursomes competition were Pam Blackburn and Daphne Hawkins with a par score of 73.

Finally, congratulations go to Ann Newman, a new young member who was third in the Yorkshire LGA Girl's Championship at Thirsk, with a score of 158 (79+79). She also won the best nett prize with a marvellous nett score of 138.

Otley Golf Club

OUT of a total of 51 entries at Otley Golf Club, 27 players ignored the elements and took to the field armed with umbrellas and waterproofs, to compete for the Veteran's Trophy on Sunday, June 27, which was bedevilled with torrential rain.

Harry Smith and Doug Worts managed to cope best, with Harry winning the Trophy on a count-back. All those who played deserved a trophy, or at least a dry set of underclothes.

Leading scores: H Smith (11) 34 points, D Worts (13) 34, B C Butler (23) 33, E G Walker (10) 32, D J Melville (15) 32.

One hundred and forty-nine players took part in the St Dunstan's Cup Competition on Saturday, July 10. Excellent golfing conditions produced some excellent scores with Matthew Campbell winning the Cup with a net 63.

The Ladies' Section of Otley Golf Club held their President's Cup competition, a 36-hole medal competition and 23 ladies entered.

The winner was Margaret Newton with a net 142, and the runner-up was Camilla Dyson with a net 145. In addition, 56 ladies took part in the July Medal and the winners were:

Division One - Margaret Newton 89-20-69, Cath Button 90-18-72.

Division Two - Liz Hill 98-30-68, Susan Ridyard 92-21-71.

Division Three - 103-32-71, Erica Pearson 115-35-80.

Ben Rhydding GC

ON Sunday the Bader Cup qualifying round was played at Ben Rhydding. This charity tournament organised by the Douglas Bader Foundation is for the benefit of emputees.

Eighteen mixed pairs competed in a mixed greensome stableford off half combined handicap in hot, sunny weather and a course in superb condition. Some good scores were returned, the best by the club president, Dick Gillgrass and his partner Wyn Laughey, with 40 points. Dick and Wyn will represent the club in the area finals at Pike Hills Golf Club in August.

Results: 1, Mr R O Gillgrass and Mrs W Laughey, 40 points; 2, Mr T Rockett and Mrs S Towler, 38 on last six, from 3, Mr P Kendall and Mrs L Smith, 38; 4, Mr B Smith and Mrs H Smith, 36 on last nine, from 5, Mr S Yeadon and Mrs L Yeadon, 36 on back nine, from 6, Mr A Brook and Mrs P Brook, 36; 7, Mr B Owens and Mrs A Clark, also 36.

On June 28, in wet, difficult conditions, Ben Rhydding Ladies 'A' team had a convincing win over Keighley Airedale 'A', five matches to two.

The Macmillan Charity competition played on June 30 benefited from sunshine and dry conditions. This stableford competition off full handicap was won by the lady captain, who has run into a rich vein of form this year.

Results: 1, Sue Towler, 35 points; 2, Muriel North, 33 on last nine from Janette Mullan, 33.

Two Ben Rhydding lady members played at Bracken Ghyll in the Ladies' Invitation Day. Janette Mullan and Sue Towler, with their Bracken Ghyll partners, returned 36 points each to finish joint second.
