READERS of the Craven Herald know that its front page is a classic.

Now it's going to be included in a list of the top 200 front pages of the 20th century.

Right up there alongside King Edward VIII abdicates, war declared on Germany, man lands on the moon, Kennedy assassinated and the Sun's infamous Gotcha! headline from the Falklands War will be the Herald's mixture of bazaars, jumble sales and Skipton Auction Mart prices.

The magazine of the British newspaper industry, Press Gazette, is compiling the list of 200 front pages from national and regional newspapers. Editor Philippa Kennedy contacted all newspapers inviting them to submit their classic front page and Craven Herald editor Ian Lockwood cheekily sent in the Herald's almost unique front page (there are just three papers left in the UK which still carry small adverts only on page one).

Miss Kennedy contacted the editor this week to say that the Herald's front page was a fascinating image of the 20th century and would be included among the 200 classic front pages of the century for the millennium souvenir edition.

An independent panel will then select 50 of the 200 to be reproduced as giant posters for the UK Press Ball. We're keeping our fingers crossed!
