Holders Barnoldswick United safely negotiated the first round of the Slater Marchant Craven Challenge Cup by beating Skipton LMS 3-2 at home but they were pushed all the way by the Skiptoners.

Ingleton beat a young Bentham side who battled hard throughout 5-0 away and there was a close encounter at Bradley where the home side lost 4-3 to Gargrave after leading 3-2 at the break.

But it was far from close for Cononley when they travelled to Rimington for they were totally outplayed and went down 10-1.

Earby Town won 4-0 at home to Horton but Earby who never stopped trying lost 2-1 to visitors Skipton Bulldogs while Skipton Town went down 2-1 at home to Grindleton.

Carleton travelled to Hellifield and lost 3-1 while St Pauls visited Dent and won 4-3.

Sedbergh Wanderers beat Barnoldswick Park Rovers 3-0 at home.

Settle's home game against Colne United ended 0-0 after extra time and the replay is this Saturday at Colne United, ko 2pm.

In the first round of the Skipton Building Society Norman Pratt Trophy Barnoldswick Park Rovers beat Grindleton 2-1 away while there were 2-0 home wins for Skipton LMS and Cononley against Skipton Town and Grassington respectively.

Craven Challenge Cup Round One

Barnoldswick United 3 Skipton LMS 2

The Skiptoners allowed Barnoldswick took much space and time in the opening 15 minutes and they scored with a well-taken goal. This spurred LMS on and they were rewarded when two mix-ups in the Barnoldswick defence allowed first Luke Walker and then Tom Wolstenholme to net. But in the last minute of the first half the homesters levelled. The second half saw LMS continue to press hard but they were denied twice by the woodwork and Barnoldswick regained the lead when a good through ball was neatly put past the keeper. The Skiptoners pushed for the equaliser and were unlucky when a great run by Wolstenholme ended with his shot being cleared off the line with minutes left. On target for the winners were Liam Roberts who hit two goals and Justin Wilson.

Rimington 10 Cononley 1

The home side took an early grip on the game and scored after only four minutes through Eric Geldard, who went on to finish with four goals. But it was another 25 minutes before there was any further score. Then after Colin Maher had netted after a sterling run by Martin O'Hara four more goals followed to make it 6-0 at the break. Cononley rallied in the second half and for 10 minutes stretched Rimington but it was a false dawn and though they did pull one back through Stephen Sisiman the score crept inexorably into double figures. With the visitors being unable to contain Rimington's speedy and tricky wingers Cononley keeper Andrew Squires kept the score down. The winners' other scorers were Paul Marsden, two, Lee Burgess, Justin Waterhouse and Wayne Hutchins.

Bradley 3 Gargrave 4

There was a perfect start for Bradley when Darren Spencer opened the scoring in the very first attack. But Gargrave equalised with a penalty for hand ball converted by Lee Reilley, who put away the rebound after keeper Trevor Cox had saved. Then Bradley went ahead with a penalty also for hand ball, James Robinson doing the honours, only for Gargrave to score through Reilly again. However Bradley went 3-2 in front at the break when James Robinson was quick to put the ball away in the six-yard box. In the second half Gargrave went level when Mark Webb scored although Bradley claimed hand ball and they got the winner when Reilly completed his hat trick with a free kick. Bradley then had two excellent chances to level but the ball would not go in.

Earby Town 4 Horton 0

In windy conditions Earby playing against the wind were 1-0 up through Craig Bailey at the interval. Then with the wind in their favour they controlled the second half and added three more goals. The names of their other scorers are not to hand.

Earby 1

Skipton Bulldogs 2

Bulldogs never got started and struggled throughout while Earby battled from start to finish. Jonnie Marchant put Dogs one up in the first half and they had other chances but Earby's new captain and their man of the match, keeper Antony Sargent, was outstanding. Earby never stopped trying and they levelled through Paul Jarvis, but Dogs got the winner in the last minute when Jimmy McConville tapped in after good work by sub Ian Bernard.

Hellifield 3 Carleton 1

In a game that was a credit to both sides Carleton were first to score with a well-taken goal by John Ellis but then they sat back and Hellifield took control and levelled through Jack Firth with a rare header. There was no further score in the first half and in the second half having wind advantage probably gave Hellifield the edge and they went ahead when Ben Sample netted direct from a corner and Andrew Dobson added a third. Carleton never gave up and had two chances to level but the Hellifield defence was well on top of their game.

Skipton Town 1 Grindleton 2

Town started brightly with an early goal from Kevin Nicholls. But after he had hammered the woodwork Grindleton imposed themselves on the game and bossed the midfield and levelled with a goal by John Garswood. Soon after the break the visitors got the winner with a penalty by Steve Wilkinson after Garswood had been brought down. Town report that they were denied a decent penalty appeal but the fitter side won.

Sedbergh Wanderers 3 Barnoldswick Park Rovers 0

In quite a physical game Sedbergh took the lead on the stroke of half-time when an Andrew Todd cross was squeezed in by John Thornton. Then after the break Barnoldswick wilted and Craig Moffat fired in a second goal from 12 yards and Todd got the third breaking away and flicking the ball over the oncoming keeper. The refereeing was good.

Bentham 0 Ingleton 5

A young Bentham side, especially their back three, battled hard throughout. But Ingleton were three up in the first 20 minutes with two brave goals by Ian Wildman and his first goal for the club by impressive centre back Andrew Wheildon since his move from Bentham this year. And Wildman could have had a hat trick with a thunderous free kick but Bentham keeper Kevin Middleton made a superb save. In the second half Wildman hit two more goals, the first a curling free kick from 20 yards and the second a wicked finish. Ingleton could easily have had four more goals with players one to one with Middleton but he bravely kept them at bay. For the final 25 minutes Bentham were reduced to 10 men due to injuries.

Dent 3 St Pauls 4

Ben Johnson opened the scoring for St Pauls with a header from 18 yards from Shaun Blackburn's cross. Dent levelled but St Pauls went ahead again when Blackburn was the provider for Paul Clarke. Again Dent levelled but St Pauls got a penalty on the stroke of half-time and although Clarke's orginal kick was saved by Danny Smith he converted the retake awarded for encroachment. Micky Dyster made it four with a cross-shot and St Pauls keeper Andy Preston made a great save from a penalty before Dent rounded off the scoring. Their scorers were Ben Smith with a free kick, Steve Hoggarth and Nigel Hoggarth after good work by Andrew Woof.

Settle 0 Colne United 0 after extra time

The North Craveners went into this game as underdogs with eight players under 21 but their fighting spirit shone through. Both sides played football in a clean game with Colne coming nearest to scoring and Settle's defence being under a lot of pressure but they were outstanding. And in the last five minutes Settle could have stolen it.

Norman Pratt Trophy Round One

Skipton LMS 2

Skipton Town 0

LMS finally made their superiority count in the second half of an engaging and occasionally spectacular local derby. They opened their account when Mark Fleming pounced on a rebound from a ferocious shot by James Potts and headed in. Their second goal was a far more dramatic affair with tenacious play by sub Paul Pethybridge freeing Paul O'Rourke whose subsequent cross allowed Steve Freakes to finish with aplomb. Town say they should have scored from one on one chances but failed to do so.

Cononley 2 Grassington 0

The home side slowly took control of the first half and after early chances scored on the half hour when James Woodward sidefooted home. And they say that they should have scored more goals before the break. Grassington woke up at half-time and took the game to Cononley who looked shaky at times but were always dangerous on the break. Sub Thomas Palin scored late in the game to wrap up victory for the homesters.

Grindleton 1 Barnoldswick Park Rovers 2

There was a great start for Grindleton when they scored in the first 10 minutes through James Towler. And they played some good flowing football until Park Rovers were awarded a penalty for hand ball and Andrew Carson scored. The visitors continued to improve and they got the winner on 62 minutes when keeper Shaun Lloyd was unlucky to see his save fall kindly for Carson to get his second.
