Golf: Darryl Berry has a chilling message for his rivals after coasting to the T&A golfer of the year trophy this year.

He has no plans to step aside and join the ranks of professionals and intends dominating the local golf scene for at least two more years.

The West Bradford 20-year-old has enjoyed his best season and finished an impressive 30 points ahead of his nearest rival with 77 points in the race for the T&A Trophy.

And he admitted that the disappointment of being narrowly pipped by Baildon's Ian Martin last year had acted as a spur in this year's contest.

"I definitely made it one of my main goals for the year," he said. "I have had a great season and winning the matchplay last week as well as playing off plus one has been a real bonus for me."

But Darryl admitted that he did not feel he was ready yet to turn professional. "Maybe in a couple of years time I will be ready for it, but not yet," he said. "I had a go for the European tour this year, but it was really mainly for the experience.

"It was great to play with some of the big names and I played alongside Scotland's Gordon Sherry. But generally I was not that impressed by the standard.

"The best of them are very good, but lower down the scale it was not that impressive. The hard thing, though, is getting into that top group.

"I want to do better in Yorkshire competitions and hopefully I will have a full, season in the Yorkshire side next year. I only managed five games for them this year."

West Bradford team-mate Mark Evans, who won the amateur strokeplay title, took second place after reaching the matchplay semi-finals.

Northcliffe's Martin Bell, a T&A Trophy winner eight times including seven straight wins from 1984-1990, marked his return to golf this year following a back injury by taking third place just a point behind.

He was runner-up to Berry in the final of the amateur matchplay at Skipton and runner-up in the Bradford Open at Keighley.

Fourth place went to last year's champion Ian Martin from Scratch League champions Baildon on 39.

Leading points scorers: 77 Darryl Berry (West Bradford), 47 Mark Evans (West Bradford), 46 Martin Bell (Northcliffe), 39 Ian Martin (Baildon), 35 Phil Wood (Keighley), Gareth Evans (Cleckheaton), 32 Andy Utley (Keighley).
