Thoughtless young cyclists are making pensioners' lives a misery, it has been claimed.

Despite being banned from cycling around Park Grove in Yeadon, youngsters have continued to ride their bikes around the houses - some of which are sheltered housing - screaming and shouting, often until dusk.

Disabled resident Tom Bell, 75, whose wife Catherine has suffered heart problems, said: "All the people around here are disabled and elderly. They complain to me but are too frightened to complain to the authorities.

"The Council put up a sign saying cycling was banned, but they just don't take any notice. They come out after school and sometimes they're out until it gets dark.

"They tear around on their bicycles screaming and they bang on our doors and windows and throw bricks."

Councillor Moira Dunn (Lab, Aireborough) said she had listened to Mr Bell's complaints and had passed them on to the Council housing manager and to the police.

"I have told the housing department and informed the police. A sign has been put up but it is not something that we can enforce," said Coun Dunn.

A spokeswoman for Leeds City Council said steps were being taken to stop the cyclists.

"We are aware of this persistent problem and have already erected a 'no cycling' sign.

"We have also requested additional surveillance from the local police. Our contract manager visited Mr Bell on Tuesday morning to discuss the situation and has asked him to record times and dates of any incidents.

"The police have been informed and we will continue to monitor the situation."
