A special mass will be held tomorrow in memory of Gwendoline Hickey, who was killed in a road accident.

Mrs Hickey, 43, of Allerton Road, Daisy Hill, Bradford, died after she and her husband Ronnie were struck by a car near her home.

Worshippers at St Matthew's RC Church in Allerton, where the couple were regulars, will gather in the church at 6.30pm for the special service to pray for Mrs Hickey and her family. They had already cancelled a dance at the church after hearing of her death.

A date for the funeral of the mother-of-two, who worked for Prestigious Textiles in Cross Lane, Westgate Hill Street, Bradford, has not been set.

Mr Hickey, who is managing director of Christopher Pratts Contracts in Bradford, suffered serious injuries in the crash and is still in a poorly but stable condition in Bradford Royal Infirmary.

Father Canice McGinn, of St Matthew's RC Church, said: "We thought it will be quite a while before the funeral takes place and Mr Hickey and the rest of the family could do with our prayers, so we're having this special mass.

"The service is in the evening, which was the time the Hickeys used to come to church on a Saturday, so we thought it would be the most appropriate time."

Ian Mark Ward, 35, of Middlebrook Close, Bradford, has been charged with causing the death of Mrs Hickey by careless driving while he was over the drink-drive limit. He is also charged with possessing cannabis. He has been remanded in custody by Bradford Magistrates.
