Traffic lights cannot be fitted at the notorious Haworth Brow junction because they could cause more accidents, say council road experts.

They say the only viable road safety measures would be better road signs, speed-reduction features and improvements to driver visibility.

Bradford council highways engineers have investigated several possible options to cut the number of accidents at the junction of Hebden Road, Brow Road and Brow Top Road. A detailed report of their findings will be given to residents at the Haworth, Stanbury and Cross Roads neighbourhood forum meeting on October 13.

The engineers suggest a new 'buildout' to move the Brow Top Road stop-line forward and give drivers better visibility when entering Hebden Road. This could be accompanied by road narrowing to reduce speed on Hebden Road during peak times, and other speed-reducing measures on the approach from Oxenhope.

The engineers have rejected traffic lights because they believe drivers would increase speed on Brow Top Road when a green signal is showing then lose control at the junction.

Existing features such as footways and underground wires and pipes make it impossible to safely position some traffic light equipment.

Three accidents at the junction have led to injuries over the past five years but an average of 15 injury accidents have happened in the same period at each of the district's traffic light junctions.

The engineers are also against changing the priority of vehicles at the junction because such an action is likely to increase accidents in the first few months.

The poor vertical alignment of Brow Top Road to Brow Road could be dangerous for drivers and drivers travelling on Hebden Road to Oxenhope face poor visibility.

The engineers say that the last options - one-way movement or the closure of Brow Road - would improve road safety but adversely affect local residents who use the junction.

A traffic engineer will attend the neighbourhood forum meeting, on Wednesday October 13 at 7pm in Haworth First School, to answer questions.

Recreation officer Ian Day will discuss proposals to improve Mytholmes Recreation Ground. Other items will include a parish council update, consultation about transport, housing and planning matters and plans to modernise the running of Bradford council.
