THOUSANDS of pounds were raised at a soccer match staged at Guiseley AFC's ground on Sunday when the skills of past legends such as Leeds United's Eddie Gray were on view.

The stars turned out at the invitation of former Barnsley manager John Hendrie, who has two children at St Mary's RC Comprehensive School, Menston.

The school is currently making a bid for sports college status and needs to raise £100,000. John has been a great help in this having already organised a very successful golf day.

On Sunday John, currently out of action following a wrist injury, managed the John Hendrie Sky Sports All Stars side which included Bradford City manager Paul Jewell, Halifax Town manager Kieran O'Regan and former Huddersfield Town manager Peter Jackson.

The side also included three men who had made bids on the internet to line up against their heroes.

These were Brian Shaw of Burley-in-Wharfedale, Adam Holden of Skipton and exiled Leeds United fan Howard Carlton of Kidderminster.

The side also included Sky Sports Spanish football commentator Rob Palmer, once a reserve goalkeeper for Derby County.

He was replaced in goal in the second-half by St Mary's PE teacher Simon Wade, no slouch himself in the goalkeeping stakes having played for Wimbledon reserves and represented Northern Ireland youth.

The match ended in a 2-0 win for the Leeds United ex-players side but strangely enough it was two players who have never turned out for Leeds who scored the goals.

The first came from substitute Peter Sumner, a young man who usually turns out with Burley Trojans and has recently joined Guiseley AFC's Academy team.

The second came from the son of former Leeds United legend Peter Lorimer - former Burley-in-Wharfedale pub licensee Simon Lorimer who was set up by the Guiseley manager Bobby Davison who was a big Elland Road favourite at one time.

Bobby also lives in Burley-in-Wharfedale so the village had a big part to play in this game.

Other former stars in the Leeds team, which was watched over by the former Leeds United, Juventus and Wales player John Charles, included Gary Williams, John McLelland, Jimmy Lumsden and Dennis Hawkins,

The real winner however was St Mary's School who raised over £3,000 .

St Mary's is expecting a decision from the DFEE next month on its bid to become a sports college.

The school has to pledge £100,000 towards the project and if the bid is successful then this will be matched by a further £1000,000 in capital funding plus £300,000 over three years to develop community links.

A crowd of almost 800 turned up for the game to help swell the funds.
