ELEVEN students from Ilkley Karate Club took part in the second Club Championship of Great Britain at Ponds Forge, Sheffield, and won seven trophies and two of them also gained selection for England.

Simon Wood, 11, now a senior grade brown belt, took second place in the boys under 4ft 9 ins category after losing in the final to one of Scotland's best cadet fighters. Simon has now secured a place in the SKU England squad and will hope to do well at the next EKGB Championships.

Nicola Frankland, 12, dominated the girls' senior grade free fighting event after storming through the elimination rounds and took first place. Nicola has also been selected for the SKU England squad.

In the Cadet Junior grade under 4ft 4 ins kumite event Joseph Outterside, aged ten, was third after losing to the eventual winner in the semi-finals.

Newcomer Ken Corless,7, also made a promising debut getting to the last eight and just missing out in the quarter-finals after storming through the first round.

Faye Cook, ten, and Maria Corless, 9, also did well coming third and fourth in the kumite event after competing against each other in a fight off for third place. Maria also did well in the junior kata and just missed out on getting a place in the last eight.

Ben Hollings, 9, was unfortunate in his bout coming up against the eventual winner in his category.

Jamie Cheikh,13, was third in the boys' over 5ft junior grade while the Ilkley adult junior team of Jamie Deyes and David Barry was second after losing to a very strong Scottish team.

Club Instructor Mark Outterside was very pleased with the club's performance especially as most of the students were taking part in a very large and very competitive event.

Mark is hoping that the club will also do well at the SKU National Championships in November.

Ilkley students Simon Wood, Joseph Outterside, Jamie Cheikh and adult Jamie Deyes are already seeded based on the last SKU Competition in May.
