Ilkley Juniors Youth 1

Addingham 2

(after extra-time)

A SCRAPPY and tense game was settled by a scrambled goal in the first period of extra game.

Division one side Addingham just about merited victory for greater territorial dominance but both sides failed to produce many thoughtful moves during the game.

The visitors were the first team to settle but the first chance of the game fell to Ilkley Youth.

Horne raced on to a through ball by Houlston and just failed to prod the ball past the onrushing Dobson. The Addingham keeper also did well to collect a close-range Selvon header from a McTigue corner.

The Ilkley side found it increasingly difficult to keep possession in attack. Collins was given too much room for Addingham and started several dangerous raids down the right side. Ilkley goalkeeper Peter Taylor was brave and decisive in collecting two dangerous crosses before another break by the Youth team saw John Keith fire over from 25 yards.

By half time it was clear that both teams were cancelling each other out in a game that huffed and puffed on occasions but hadn't really started.

Ilkley Youth finally took the lead on the hour. After Selvon had seen a close range flick saved by Dobson, he beat the cumbersome Addingham offside trap, latching onto a Joe McTigue through ball and his first time cross was side-footed home by Joe Horne.

A fortuitous lead perhaps but reward for determined defending and hard work throughout the team.

Addingham pressed more urgently for an equaliser and hit the bar with a header. McTigue then made a last-ditch tackle after a slip by Beaumont.

The visitors finally levelled matters with 10 minutes left. A corner was only partially cleared and Smith swept the ball home.

The game drifted towards the inevitable extra time with neither side looking capable of breaking the stalemate. The introduction of Tod and Dadd provided fresh legs for Ilkley Youth, who were kept in the game in the first minute of extra time when Taylor tipped a Kelly shot onto the bar.

Dixon then went close to putting Ilkley back in front but it was Addingham who took the lead when Barrow bundled the ball home at the far post.

This proved to be the winner as Ilkley could not find a reply. A goal mouth scramble following a Dixon free kick proved to be the home side's last chance.

Peter Taylor deservedly earned man of the match for a decisive and brave display of goalkeeping.
