SIR - It was with great regret that the Haworth Road Safety Action Group received the sad news of the death of one of our leading members.

Smith Midgley had for many years campaigned for improved road safety in Haworth to ensure a safer village for this community.

Only hours earlier we had received the news from Bradford Council that safety measures would be implemented at the Hebden Road/Brow Top Road junction.

Despite his age and frailty, Smith could always be relied upon to fight for community issues. He had taken part in a high profile protest earlier this year in snow and appalling weather conditions to publicise road safety issues.

Smith was probably better known as a local councillor by many, but he had many other interests related to the community in which he lived. His interests extended far and wide.

Whether he was a school governor, leading campaigner for the Haworth Parish Council, local historian, author or supporting one of his many other roles, he always remained a leading light who was never afraid to fight for his village.

Haworth has lost a very knowledgeable, wise gentleman and a true friend to many.

He will be sadly and fondly missed by our group as well as many other organisations.
