An out-of-control car hurtled hundreds of yards down the middle of a busy main road towards terrified motorists before being in collision with two vehicles.

Police believe the 44-year-old man at the wheel had a health condition and could have suffered some sort of attack before the accident in Killinghall Road, Fagley, Bradford, yesterday.

Eye witness salesman Bob Bamford said he saw the vehicle crash through two plastic bollards and a steel signpost on a pedestrian crossing before the final impact hundreds of yards away.

Mr Bamford, who works at Moor Park Garage in Killinghall Road, said: "It was a miracle nobody was on the crossing.

"All I saw was a line of traffic heading away from Laisterdyke and then this green Renault Laguna shot past them down the middle of the road.

"It just smashed straight through the bollards and the sign, scattering them all over the road.

"The car seemed to be in a low gear, maybe third, because the engine was screaming which was the noise which grabbed my attention in the first place."

Officers from the Eccleshill Road Traffic Unit were called at 2.36pm to the accident in Killinghall Road next to the turning with Third Avenue.

Two fires engines from Bradford and Pudsey were also called to the scene and found four smashed up vehicles scattered across the road.

PC David Bodiam, of Eccleshill Road Traffic Unit, said: "On first impression it appears a vehicle has been travelling towards Undercliffe away from Laisterdyke and the driver has suffered some sort of illness as he's been driving and lost control of the car. He's come straight down the middle of the road, hit some bollards, and then has been in collision with a car which was waiting to turn right into Third Avenue.

"After that impact he's swerved into a broadside position, being involved in another collision with a car which was travelling towards Laisterdyke. A fourth car, which was also travelling in the opposite direction, was also involved in that collision"

Three people were treated for shock and minor injuries by paramedics at the scene.

A WYMAS spokesman said one man was taken to Bradford Royal Infirmary by ambulance but it was not thought his condition was serious.
