The managing director of a quarry and demolition company has been fined £2,500 after he admitted thrusting a beer glass into a man's neck during an argument at a funeral wake.

Mark Reid, 43, pleaded guilty at Bradford Crown Court to unlawfully wounding Jeremy Slunker - who was not in court and had retracted his statement about the incident.

Reid, of Otley Road, Baildon, was arrested the day after the clash in the Shoulder of Mutton pub, Otley Road, 16 months ago. He told police that he had been extremely drunk and estimated that he had drunk between ten and 15 pints of beer.

Prosecutor Gerald Hendron said an argument began between Mr Slunker and a man who was among the group attending the wake. As one of the bar staff tried to separate them Reid thrust a half-pint glass into Mr Slunker's neck.

Reid's barrister, Simon Myers, said his client could remember nothing about the incident, but was prepared to accept the evidence of the prosecution witnesses.

He described Reid as a "valuable member of society" who employed more than 50 people and gave time and money to many charitable causes.
