Amateur Rugby League: Clayton gave Underbank Rangers a footballing lesson to win 22-12 in the Pennine Premier Division encounter at the Delph and added insult to injury by leap-frogging the Huddersfield side into third place to qualify for this season's Silk Cut Challenge Cup.

Coach Paul Gill is as pleased as punch with his charges who have recovered in style from their terrible start to the season to post four wins on the trot.

The first half was a very tight affair at 10-6 but the Villagers never looked back when their undoubted skill on the ball took its toll.

The versatile Darren Collins relished his new role at full-back to post two touchdowns with wingman Jeremy Robertshaw also crossing the whitewash. Centre Chris Parr was bang on form with the boot with five successful kicks but it was the impressive work rate of loose forward Richard Wood that took the eye.

Queensbury, who have been drawn at home to Hunslet Warriors in the fourth round of the Yorkshire Cup, also qualify for the Challenge Cup despite a surprise 19-12 defeat at home to Park Amateurs.

Bury lacked three regulars but welcomed back Matthew Galtress from injury. The burly second-row forward scored the opening try converted by hooker Steve Gallagher. The lead was short lived however with Park posting two quick tries and when centre Darren Brown was sin-binned for holding down they scored another from the resulting penalty.

On the stroke of half-time Queensbury's lively scrum half Carl Smith bamboozled the visitors defence with a neat side step to score near enough the posts for Gallagher to again convert and level the scores 12-12.

In the second half Bury's second row forward Gary Prentice was led of with a rib injury and despite the prompting of Galtress - who justly earned the man of the match award - it was Park who carried the day with a converted try and a dropped goal.

Division One Birkenshaw celebrated their first ever win at Park Amateurs A by 24-6. There was a shock for Birky in mid-week when prop forward Andy Redmond discovered he had a broken collarbone but they hardly missed him on the day scoring a total of five tries.

They did all the donkey work in the first half with splendid touchdowns from centre David Turpin 2 and Jason Brooksbank. Wing man Glenn Tillotson converted two of them and they turned round 16-0 to the good.

Park were never a threat in the second period and a try to stand off Morton Robinson plus another fine effort from Brooksbank with Tillotson adding the extras keeps Birky in second place.

There was bad news for Undercliffe who went down 24-8 at Guiseley and Odsal Sedbergh were caned 45-2 at Illingworth.

In Division Two Wyke were on the wrong end of a 56-22 defeat at St Josephs but Dudley Hill Eagles gave their best performance of the season only to go down 22-18 at Ovenden A.

The Eagles were clearly the better side in the first half but trailed by just one point 15-14 at the break. Two very questionable disallowed tries then put paid to their chances. Hooker Matthew Green on permit from Hunslet led the way with a hat trick and twenty-one-year-old stand-off Ross Mitchell - returning to duty following a dislocated shoulder - showed he has lost none of his flair by posting a fine effort.

Steve Fowler kicked the only goal but watch out for forwards Paul Coates and Gareth Shepherd who proved to be a real handful which bodes well for the Eagles future.

If the game between West Bowling A and Stainland Stags had been a boxing match the referee would have stopped the contest. Bowling posted sixteen tries in the massive 86-8 win to go four points clear at the top of the table. Tries came from Darren Redmond 2 Steve Gregory 3 Dean Minchella Andy Mears Shah Basha Ian Wormold Rob Benn Shaun Fallon Paul Ali John Helliwell and Chris Makowski. Jason Woolham kicked eleven goals and two tries.

In Division Five West Bowling B, not to be outdone, beat Hoyland Vikings 50-10. The scorers were Wesley Brearton (2) Dave Thorburn (2), Peter Ryan (2), Jonathan Johnson Chris Scott and Wayne Cowdry. Simon Armitage kicked seven goals.
