Cricket: Two pitches on the Headingley square have been relaid at a cost of £5,000 by head groundsman Andy Fogarty who is aiming to produce better surfaces with more consistent bounce.

Fogarty dug down to a depth of 15 inches to lay Ongar loam on a base of limestone chippings and says he is well pleased with the grass covering already established.

These are the first pitches which Fogarty had relaid since his appointment four years ago when he took over from Keith Boyce.

Yorkshire coach and former batsman Doug Padgett, who retired at the end of the season after more than 40 years' continuous service with the club, received a cut glass claret jug from chairman Keith Moss at a gala dinner at Headingley to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Roses cricket.

On behalf of Yorkshire, Moss also presented Fred Trueman with a similar gift in recognition of his then record-breaking 307 wickets for England. Proceeds from the dinner were in aid of the Jamie Hood Appeal Fund.

Former Yorkshire captain John Hampshire has replaced Mervyn Kitchen on the ICC panel of international umpires. He joins George Sharp, David Shepherd and Peter Willey who have all been renominated for a further year.

Hampshire played in eight Tests for England between 1969-75 and joined the First Class Umpires' list in 1985.
