A memorial to tragic teenager James Raw is to be established at his former school, it was revealed today.

Meanwhile a police investigation into the bus crash which killed the popular student just weeks into his university career is continuing.

James, 18, of Burley Road, Menston, died last Thursday when the bus on which he was travelling back to Lancaster University after a night out in Morecambe collided with a lorry.

The teenager, who dreamed of a career with the police or armed forces and had just started a combined sciences degree at Lancaster, was thrown through the double decker's front window. Now staff and students at Otley's Prince Henry's Grammar School, which James left in the summer with four A-levels, are planning a memorial to him.

Headteacher John Steel said: "We are planning to have some kind of memorial to James although its exact nature has not yet been decided. That will depend on what the students who knew him and his family feel would be appropriate and we shall be discussing that once the half-term holiday is over. We'd do exactly the same for any other student because it's our belief that we should remember our colleagues in some way and that's what we're going to do.

"James was just a magnificent student who achieved a great deal and it's just so sad that he should have it all taken away, having worked so hard to get to university.''

Mr Steel added that it was likely a memorial service for James would be held during a school assembly once pupils were back from the half-term break.

During his time at Prince Henry's, James, who was a member of Otley Parish Scouts, had taken a sports leadership course and helped out with the Year Seven hockey club.

A post mortem examination has revealed James died from multiple injuries and an inquest into his death was opened and adjourned.

PC Steve Middleton, coroner's officer for North Lancashire, said the full inquest was expected to be held later in the year.

Witnesses to the accident, which left 33 other people injured, were still being interviewed and it was still not clear whether James had been on the top or bottom deck at the time, he said.

A spokesman for Lancashire Police said: "The investigation into the accident is continuing.''

A funeral service is due to be held at 12 noon tomorrow when James's colleagues from the Venture Scouts will form a guard of honour outside Otley Parish Church.
