Detectives today stepped up their hunt for a hit-and-run driver who killed a 51-year-old Bradford man.

Police were handing out hundreds of leaflets asking for new information.

The leaflets are being distributed to homes and businesses in the Great Horton and Lidget Green area, along the route taken by the stolen BMW following the accident.

Officers have also set up a confidential information line for members of the public which will remain open until 10pm tonight.

Police also spoke to members of the public and handed out leaflets on the Buttershaw estate where the BMW was spotted shortly before it mowed down Raymond Thompson, of Hartington Terrace, Lidget Green.

It was seen by Barden Avenue at 11am before driving onto Great Horton Road where it hit Mr Thompson as he crossed the road. After racing away from the scene the car - registration N527 BUA - was later found abandoned in Cousen Avenue, Lidget Green.

Det Chief Insp Hyde said: "House-to-house enquiries have already taken place but we are hoping our special intensive exercise this morning will enable us to reach more people."

Mr Thompson, known to his friends as Keith, was killed on Friday, October 15, on Great Horton Road, at its junction with Ward Street.

A marked police car had spotted the BMW earlier in Buttershaw and had been looking for the vehicle when the accident happened.

The driver failed to stop at the scene and sped off.

Sending out a fresh appeal for information today, Detective Chief Superintendent Stuart Hyde, said: "You may be able to help us track down the driver of that car.

"Ask yourself, did you see the black BMW? Do you know the driver? Could you recognise him? Have you seen the car in the area before?

"If you haven't spoken to the police or, if you can help us identify the driver of the BMW that day please give us a call. If you want to talk to us in total confidence you can also use the Crimestoppers' hotline."

The driver is said to be of Asian appearance, aged between 18 and 20. Police say the BMW was stolen from the Harrogate area on September 8.

Anyone with information can ring the information line until 10pm tonight on Bradford 373112, West Yorkshire Police on 0845 6060606 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
