A Bingley man has scooped a whopping £48,931 payout by betting on the Irish Lottery.

The win - believed to be the biggest of its kind in the north - came from a £4.36 bet which was placed at Ladbrokes in Bingley.

The man, who wants to remain anonymous, placed four £1 bets. The first bet was that two of his chosen numbers would be drawn in the Irish Lottery, then three, four and finally five. As five were drawn his cumulative win totalled nearly £49,000.

"This is believed to be the biggest win in the north although someone in London won £100,000 last year," said Kevin Miller at Ladbrokes.

"Betting on the Irish lottery is increasingly popular as people know that if three of their numbers come up they will win £422 from us whereas if three of their numbers come up in the English lottery they will only win £10."
