Odsal favourite Paul Medley has announced his retirement as a player after a 15-year career.

Medley, 33, helped Dewsbury to the Northern Ford Premier-ship Grand Final at the end of last season and had considered another season with the Rams, but admits injuries have finally taken their toll.

"If I was being honest my arm has not been the same since I broke it in Auckland during the World Club Championship with the Bulls a couple of years ago. I have also had a lot of Achilles problems and, all things considered, I think the timing is right to quit.

"I began my career with Leeds at Headingley and I think it is quite fitting that I should finish there in a final with Dewsbury.

"I have had highs and lows like everyone else, but I wouldn't change anything. The game has been fantastic to me and I would like to thank the fans for their support over the years."

Medley is in the final throws of completing a well-earned benefit after ten years at Odsal following his £100,000 move from Halifax in 1989.

He won four Great Britain caps during his time with Leeds, but says the highlight was the 1997 Super League title win with the Bulls and successive Wembley appearances in 1996 and 1997.

"They were fantastic times and it was great to be part of the side as the Bulls phenomena really took off.

"I was actually on the loser's side in all eight major finals I played in, but that championship winners' medal helped make up for that.

"As a boy I dreamed of playing at Wembley and, although we lost both times, it was still a fantastic experience."

Medley is keen to stay in the game though and hopes to progress his career as a development officer for the Bulls.
