Transport company FirstGroup and BP Amoco have agreed a £400 million deal which will see the oil group supply "green" diesel fuel to 10,000 buses.
FirstGroup runs First Bradford and bus services in other parts of West Yorkshire.
BP Amoco is to provide 230 million litres a year of an environmentally-friendly diesel fuel with low sulphur concentrate in a three-year deal.
The two companies said using the new fuel across FirstGroup's buses would reduce carbon monoxide emissions by 3,500 tonnes and sulphur by 300 tonnes.
The new fuel emits 90 per cent less sulphur emissions and less black smoke than standard diesel.
Moir Lockhead, chief executive of FirstGroup said: "Buses are already an environmentally friendly form of our transport - particularly the thousands of new vehicles we have introduced with their efficient engines.
"This new partnership with BP will reduce pollutant levels in our towns and cities still further."
