Villagers will finally have a chance this week to quiz Council officials over major roadworks.

A £200,000 scheme to rebuild the A629 in Denholme is due to take place next year.

There were angry scenes at a neighbourhood forum meeting in the village when the plans were due to be discussed - because no-one from Bradford Council's highways department attended.

But now a one-off public meeting has been organised for 6pm on Wednesday at Denholme Primary School.

Officers from the highways department will be at the meeting to answer questions. They will also hold an exhibition about the scheme in the Reading Room of the Mechanics Institute in Denholme from 2pm to 5.30pm on Wednesday.

Denholme Town Mayor Councillor Russell Driver said: "This will be an opportunity to have an open meeting and discuss the proposals face to face with highways officials."

The roadworks will affect the stretch of Main Road, Denholme, between South Street and Carr Lane and will cause massive disruption.

Villagers are being asked when they would prefer the work to be carried out.

More than 1,200 letters have been sent to residents outlining three options - working on Sundays only, which would mean the scheme would take about 30 weeks to complete; working Mondays to Saturday, which would mean it would last about six weeks, or working seven days a week which would see it completed in about four weeks.

A Bradford Council spokesman said: "This is a major scheme and unfortunately it will be impossible to avoid disrupting the village while the work takes place.

"That is why we are consulting the people of Denholme at an early stage to give them a say in how we manage that disruption and to find out when they would prefer the work to be done."

Villagers are also being asked whether they would like the work to be carried out in the winter and spring; in the summer; during Easter or Spring Bank school holidays; outside school holidays or at any other specified time.
