A Keighley man who denied charges of threatening to kill a number of prominent people, including former Olympic show jumper Harvey Smith, has failed in his bid to lodge an appeal against his conviction and sentence for other offences.

Peter Snowden, 53, of Upper Hird Street, was jailed for nine years at Newcastle Crown Court last year.

He had earlier pleaded guilty to obtaining property by deception, attempting to obtain property by deception, and two charges of incitement to commit burglary at two addresses in Keighley. Snowden had denied issuing threats to kill six people - including Harvey Smith, former West Yorkshire Chief Constable Keith Hellawell and former Keighley MP Gary Waller - soliciting to murder six people and a charge of incitement to commit grievous bodily harm. The 13 charges were ordered to lie on file.

On Tuesday at London's Court of Appeal, Snowden sought leave to appeal.

A spokesman for the court said: "His application for leave to appeal against his conviction and sentence was refused."
