Bradford City striker Dean Saunders is relishing the chance to add to his 22 goals when he travels with Wales to the Middle East to face Qatar tomorrow.

But the 35-year-old has admitted it is City's Premiership clash with Aston Villa three days later which is dominating his thoughts.

Saunders is in line to make his 74th appearance for Wales in a friendly clash which will be Mark Hughes' first game since he took full charge of the national side. And if he can grab one goal he will move into second place in the all-time scoring charts for Wales behind Ian Rush who has 28.

The City striker said: "All the lads in the Welsh squad are people I have known since I was younger. Because we don't play together that often, it is always nice to meet up.

"It is a bit of a change from a normal week. Playing for your country is the highest honour you can have as a professional and I am very proud to have been picked.

"I know it is an international but it is only a friendly. I will definitely have one eye on the Aston Villa game because that is much more important in my mind. I won't be able to stop thinking about the Villa match because it is so important for everyone at the club."

Saunders has played a huge part in City's revival over the last three games, his partnership with Dean Windass boosting the side's attacking options.

Saunders is backing Hughes to have a positive impact for the Welsh.

He said: "I have always got on well with Mark and played a lot of football with him."
