Masked robbers threatened staff and customers with a double-barrelled shotgun at a Bradford burger bar.

Two men wearing balaclavas burst into the McDonald's restaurant on Rooley Lane, Bradford, shortly before 11pm yesterday.

The pair demanded money from the 26-year-old manageress, who was cashing up the night's takings, and threatened to use violence.

As customers cowered in fear, one of the men jumped over the serving counter and grabbed the contents of the safe.

Police said today that the quick-fire raid was over within a matter of minutes.

Members of staff gave chase as the armed robbers dashed out of the drive-through.

Detectives say witnesses then spotted a small dark-coloured car, possibly a Corsa or VW Polo, driving off along Park Way.

It is not yet known whether the gunmen used that car to escape and officers are appealing for the occupants to come forward so they can be eliminated from inquiries.

Detective Chief Inspector Tony Hennigan, of Odsal CID, said: "This was a wicked crime which traumatised members of staff and customers alike." He said the robbers struck as staff were preparing to close the premises. A handful of customers were still inside the restaurant.

DCI Hennigan said: "One of the robbers was armed with a double barrelled shotgun, which is a clear intention they were prepared to use violence. They escaped with a substantial amount of cash from the safe."

Detectives were today scrutinising CCTV footage in the search for vital clues. And they are looking at a number of similar attacks throughout the region to try to establish possible links.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Odsal CID on Bradford 376885.
