The future of a landmark footbridge is being put in the hands of pedestrians.

Millions of vehicles have passed under the footbridge over the A650 Bingley Road at Nab Wood since the early 1970s.

But with the little-used bridge now in need of major repairs and a new puffin crossing recently installed nearby, its days could be numbered.

The Highways Agency is planning to carry out the repairs project - set to cost an estimated £220,000 - but first wants to find out residents' views on whether the bridge should be kept.

Bradford Council has organised a special single issue Nab Wood and Shipley Central Neighbourhood Forum for Tuesday when local people will have their say.

And residents are also being urged to complete questionnaires aimed at gauging their thoughts on the bridge's future.

A Council spokesman said: "When we became aware the Highways Agency was proposing to do the repairs we said the best idea would be to carry out consultation to find out whether people still used the bridge.

"It makes no difference to the Council whether it's retained or not but there is the potential for huge waste if it is taken away, strengthened and then brought back if people don't actually use it or want it.''

Councillor John Carroll (Con, Shipley West) said: "If people still use the footbridge then it should remain but if residents are happy using the puffin crossing then it could be taken down.''

A Highways Agency spokesman said: "We do have plans to strengthen the supports of the footbridge, which would involve dismantling it and taking it away, later this year.

"But there is a pedestrian crossing fairly close by so it's questionable whether the bridge is still needed."

The forum will be held at Nab Wood Middle School in New Close Road at 6pm. Alternatively questionnaires are available by phoning (01274) 757146.
