A new railway bridge and road are being proposed to cure a traffic logjam at Kildwick level crossing.

Parish councils and district councillors have been demanding action to prevent tailbacks of traffic at the crossing, some stretching as far as Kildwick roundabout on the Aire Valley trunk road.

North Yorkshire County Council is proposing a £2.2 million diversion, which would involve building a loop road from a junction near the Dalesway, on the A6068, Keighley to Skipton road.

It would cross open land to a new bridge across the railway and rejoin the A6068 at the new mini-roundabout near the industrial estate.

The county highways sub-committee, which meets today, is recommending the loop option and wants Craven council to give its views.

Craven councillor Ken Hart (Sutton/Lib-Dem) said he favoured the loop option which he believed would have a significant impact in reducing tailbacks.

Craven council colleague Stephen Place (Ind/Sutton) said: "I support the loop option because it has the most chance of being accepted. The situation can only get worse as more in-fill development takes place in the area."
