Young golfer Simon Jowitt, 19, has passed his PGA administrative review programme examination with an excellent 26 marks out of a possible 27.

His next examination on the way to becoming a golf professional is a playing ability test at Bolton in June.

Simon has been assistant proessional at Branshaw Golf Club for the last two years, during which time he has reduced his playing handicap from 13 to 2.6.

He has been a member at Keighley Golf Club since he was nine, but only played about three rounds in the first three years. He took up the game seriously when he was 16, after breaking a leg while playing football.

Simon comes from a golfing family - dad Keith has the driving range at Silsden and plays off eight handicap at Keighley, while sister Lindy plays off 13 at Keighley and is a member of the Yorkshire Girls team.

n Defending Bradford Scratch League 1st Division champions Baildon suffered a 6-2 defeat at Rawdon on Friday and dropped to third place, two points behind Northcliffe who shared the points at Silsden. Keighley halved with West Bradford.

In Division 3 Branshaw lost 8-0 at South Bradford to go bottom of the table, while Skipton lost 5-3 at Headley. Riddlesden are joint top of the 4th Division after their 4-4 result at Phoenix Park.

n Silsden Ladies won the Bradford Ladies Evening League team championships, held at Shipley. The team of mother and daughter Jackie and Claire Starkie, Jill Atkinson and Kate Parker beat their nearest rivals by 17 shots to claim the title.

n A Silsden Rabbits team won a Millennium invitation event at Clayton Golf Club on Saturday. Ranbir Kapur, Mike Sawley and Graham Forster joined with a Clayton member to win with a three from four to count score of 211, with Skipton second on 214.

n Branshaw professional Mark Tyler and 16 handicapper David Steel will be taking part in the north-east regional final of Europe's biggest pro-am competition, the Lombard Trophy, at Pannal Golf Club on Wednesday.

Mark, 26, who has been pro at Branshaw for the last four years, and David, 46, won their club qualifying competition in April with a net 62. They will line up on Wednesday with 85 other partnerships, hoping for a place in the final and a five-day all expenses paid trip to the Algarve in October.
