A Keighley teenager is embarking on an adventure of a lifetime next year.

Jon Worsnop, 18, of Rose Meadows, off Fell Lane, will be part of a ten-week Operation Raleigh International expedition to Chile in January.

Operation Raleigh aims to help youngsters learn from exciting experiences and aid developing countries.

In Chile, Jon will be one of a team of 17 to 25-year-olds whose tasks include mountaineering, scientific projects, environmental work and community projects.

The expedition forms part of his Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award.

Jon qualified for the expedition after a physical and mental assessment at Sheffield.

Mongolia, Ghana, Libya and Brunei were among the expeditions on offer.

He says: "I chose Chile because I like mountaineering.

"I've climbed mountains in England, but never had the chance to do it abroad."

After 12 years in Scouting, and now a Venture Scout, building apprentice Jon says he is more than ready for the physical challenges of the trip.

But he first has to raise £3,200 and is seeking sponsorship.

So far Raleigh have organised a 26-mile walk on the Brecon Beacons, in Wales, and Keighley's Whatever You Want store is helping organise a raffle.

Jon is also considering the torture of a sponsored bare foot walk on Scafell Pike.

Anyone who may be able to help with sponsorship should telephone Jon on 01535 667424.
