South Craven School has scooped a share of a £1.55m cash windfall.

North Yorkshire council has borrowed the Government money to extend its schools for a growing influx of pupils from primary schools.

South Craven can now start drawing up plans for a £230,000 two-storey technology block extension. It will hold four classrooms with storerooms, a resource area and an office.

The school is paying for £80,000 of the work from its own budget. Headteacher John Vickers says: "We have more youngsters in the school than we can cater for.

"We're unlikely to increase admission but it will help us cope better with the students we've got. I hope it will help us get rid of some temporary accommodation.

"We've known for the past two or three months that we've got the money but it's only now we can talk about drawings and get the show on the road." Work on the block will probably start in January.
