A Millennium garden with themed areas for all sections of the community is beginning to take shape.

And on Sunday the Friends of Micklefield Park in Rawdon are hoping to raise more funds at their fun day for all the family.

The group is about to start on the second phase of the garden's development in the park, and council workers are due to move in to start creating footpaths in the area earmarked for the transformation. It has already been cleared ready for work to begin, and the group hopes to start planting trees and shrubs later this year.

The aim of the project is to create a garden with different theme areas to suit everyone, including a quiet area and a garden with perfumed plants. The group is raising money for the garden itself, and many businesses in Rawdon have contributed to the project.

Friends of Micklefield Park member Susan Gray said: "The business people of Rawdon have been very generous."

Now the Friends want to raise the cash to pay for the third phase of the project by inviting people to sponsor plants, trees and shrubs.

They hope to raise some money and support for the project at the annual family fun day this weekend. They will have a stand set up at the fair where visitors will be able to sponsor a plant in the garden.

Attractions at the fair, between 1pm and 5pm, include children's rides and games, a bouncy castle, pony rides, Morris dancers and a band.
