A security guard will have to wait six months to find out if he has caught Aids after being attacked by an armed man, a Court was told.

Valereo Romeo had a needle dragged across his wrist during a struggle with the 32-year-old outside a supermarket in Bradford.

During the incident last February, another store detective, James Shepherd, felt two sharp pains in his hand.

After tests for Aids were carried out, Mr Shepherd was found to have no trace of the condition.

But Bradford Crown Court heard that six months would be needed to see if Mr Romeo had contracted Aids.

Prosecutor David McGonigal described how Joseph Lawrence left the Morrison's store in Westgate without paying for razor blades and tablets before the two guards confronted him.

A struggle then took place before Lawrence was subdued and arrested by police.

When interviewed he admitted taking the property, claiming he used the needle in self-defence.

Lawrence, of Harrogate Terrace, Undercliffe, Bradford, pleaded guilty to theft and two charges of assault with intent to resist arrest.

His barrister told the court that Lawrence "punctured" both of the store detectives and accepted responsibility for his actions.

Jailing him for a total of 210 days, Judge Roger Scott said that the offences justified a custodial sentence.
