Planners have given the go-ahead for Brighouse Sports Club to relocate and a new Tesco supermarket to be built in its place.

Councillors on Calderdale Council's planning committee voted four for and three against each application which will now go before the Department of the Environment, Trade and the Regions because of their size.

Tesco, which is to build a multi-million pound store on the Brighouse Sports Club ground in Clifton Road, Brighouse, supported an application for the club to be re-sited on open land in Bradford Road.

It is not known when work will start on the £2 million club, which will include a county-standard cricket field, rugby and football pitches and two bowling greens.

The sports club will not move from its present site until members are satisfied the new facilities are ready for use.

The new supermarket is expected to create 210 new jobs and 130 staff will be transferred from the Tesco store in nearby Briggate, which will close.

More than 200 letters of objection were received against Tesco's plans but no objectors attended the meeting yesterday.
