Bradford City have promised not to rush the recuperation of Peter Beagrie after their star winger returned to training this week.

Beagrie battled through the pain to aid the Bantams' great escape from relegation last season after suffering an Achilles injury.

He went under the knife for a double operation amid all the post-survival hysteria in May and has made his first step on the road to recovery by returning to light training with the squad as they prepare for Saturday's Intertoto Cup third round second leg against Dutch side RKC Waalwijk.

But manager Chris Hutchings said he was in no hurry to push Beagrie into a competitive match.

"Peter has joined us for half a session and he's looking to step up his training now," Hutchings said.

"He needs to get his strength back in his Achilles and when he makes a full comeback depends on the reaction he gets from his workout.

"I'm not going to risk him at this moment in time."

One player who could be ready for his first competitive match of the pre-season campaign is Jamie Lawrence.

The right-sided midfielder scored in a 3-1 practice match win against Rochdale this week to give Hutchings a timely nudge ahead of the trip to Holland.

David Hopkin was given an hour's run-out to add to his 23-minute spell against Waalwijk with trialists Adam Hardy and Craig Fishlock also given a chance to impress.

Hutchings said: "It was a good workout for everybody.

"We continued the work we have done over the previous few weeks.

"It was also good for David and Jamie to get a little match practice.

"But we are still mulling over one or two things before naming this week's team and we will see how everyone recovers."
