Escapologist Nick Janson went down a bomb at the millennium Ingleton Gala.

Billed as Britain's most handcuffed man he was the star attraction at the event. Handcuffed by the local constabulary, he was locked into a large bomb and lifted into the air under a mock-up plane attached to a crane. After a one minute countdown the bomb plummeted to the ground and opened to reveal Mr Janson had disappeared. He then emerged from the plane and shinned down a rope to great applause.

The escapologist shared the limelight with the Kendalian Majorettes who strutted their stuff both in the ring and around the village.

These tuneful youngsters also headed the parade. Behind them came four floats, including that carrying Gala Queen Verity Hughes, and the fancy dress parade. Once on the field they were greeted by the inexhaustible Master of Ceremonies Mary Kendall.

Callan Murray, carrying the Gala Queen's crown on a cushion, was followed by Verity and her attendants, Lisa-Marie Ward, Maisie Thistlethwaite, Sarah Morphet, Emma Taylor, Bethan Davies and Francesca Stark, in a procession around the main ring. Last year's queen Michelle Leeson crowned Verity to the sound of a fanfare and balloons were then released as part of the great Primary School PTA balloon race.

At around the same time Emma Sullivan reached the summit of Ingleborough, having made her way up there hitting a hockey ball with a stick along the way. She was raising money for an adventure challenge to Alaska in 2001 and later appeared in the arena, having chased her quarry all the way down again.

An army of runners then set off on the mountain race to the summit of Ingleborough. The seniors were followed by the juniors, who made their way to Crina Bottom. Joe Symonds, of Kendal, was first junior boy and the first senior was Stephen Hawkins. First local senior was Martin Holroyd, of Burton-in-Lonsdale, who was closely followed by Bentham's Nick Percival.

Meanwhile there were plenty of stalls and amusements on the field. Various clubs and societies had side shows, and the Ingleborough Women's Institute put on afternoon teas in the Community Centre. The day drew to a close with the usual voluntary litter pick, and the organisers giving thanks that the rain stayed away.
