ALBUM: Dirty Beatniks
Since the incredible international success of Fatboy Slim, Skint Records found themselves in a financial position to sign many more hopefuls.
Unfortunately the consistency of creativity isn't always there, and although Dirty Beatniks create adequate house-based music they rarely break the mould or move into uncharted territory.
"Feedback" plies us with occasionally-clever backbeats, and sampling over Bobby Gillespie-inspired rap, which seems very popular these days.
The tracks Curled Up In A Basebin and Kris Kristofferson are very good, using reversed guitars and live drums, but are counteracted by yawnsome interludes of ill-conceived time-wasting.
There's no doubt that Dirty Beatniks have a place in dance history, creating a gangway for many rock/dance crossovers that are currently doing the business.
The competition is hot out there, and with the expert genius of bands such as Death in Vegas they don't really get a look in. But fans of this sort of thing should definitely give the Dirty Beatniks a listen.
