Home-grown fresh fruit and vegetables, cheese, honey and bread were just a small selection of organic produce available at Heckmondwike's first farmers' market.

The monthly event, which runs alongside an already successful farmers' market in Holmfirth, and proved a success on its opening day.

Malcolm Veigas, Kirklees Markets General Manager, said they were trying to make better use of local market venues.

"We did the Sunday car boot sales for Dewsbury and are trying to do something in Batley. Heckmondwike is next on the list," he said.

The idea came on the back of the GM foods controversy. "The idea is that local people sell local produce. Most of it comes from within a 30-mile radius of the market, so it is probably picked and packed on Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning for the Sunday farmers' market," he said. "All the foods are fresh and most are organic."

More exotic foods, such as ostrich and water buffalo meat, could hit the market following their success at Holmfirth, and already roast hog and locally produced spicy sausages are available at Heckmondwike.
