The latest round in a battle to turn a village quarry into a landfill has gone the way of the developers with council officers advising planners to give the scheme the go ahead.

But the vote of support for Wastewise waste management services has failed to deter opponents of the Buck Park quarry scheme who say the recommendation is simply par for the course.

Bradford council Shipley area planning panel was meeting tonight to discuss the plans for the Denholme site. An earlier application by Wastewise was rejected by the authority last year.

The company has submitted a new application for the quarry which it says has incorporated concerns raised by residents during the first set of plans.

The Denholme Residents Action Group (DRAG) vociferously objected to the plans.

Among members' main concerns were an increase in traffic through the village as work to turn the quarry into a landfill began and the effects on the landscape.

But a spokesman for Wastewise said: "While the development will not significantly increase traffic flows, the company has listened to the concerns of residents with regard to road safety issues and has agreed to contribute £40,000 towards a new puffin-style pedestrian crossing in the village.

"This investment is in addition to the £500,000 Wastewise will be spending on redesigning the road junction of Whalley Lane with the A629."Wastewise project manager Nick Davies added: "We have acted positively to address the concerns of residents and I hope now that we can move forward."

Planning officers have recommended the imposing of 34 conditions on the scheme should it be given the go ahead.

They include:

l the landfill only operate for ten years.

l a new access road has to be built before landfiling.

l vehicle numbers be limited to 49 loads a day.

all plant and machinery to be fitted with silencers.

l detailed submitted before landfilling.

Michael Drake, from DRAG, said: "The council's officers recommended approval last time as well and we managed to over turn it that time, so hopefully we can do the same again.

"Our objections still stand and we hope the councillors still feel the same way. We have some new speakers working with us and our arguments should be even more convincing than last time."
