A Keighley businessman has been fined £1,750 after an investigation into tyre dumping.

Trevor Bernard Birkett, a partner in Bingley retail and repair firm Castle Tyres, was fined after admitting failing to properly document transactions in old tyres.

Bingley magistrates heard that Birkett, of Riddlesden, Keighley, who was also ordered to pay £651 costs, failed to ensure waste tyres were passed to an authorised person last August.

He also admitted failing to ensure a waste-transfer note was completed on August 28 and December 15.

The investigation was prompted by an increase in tyre fly-tipping throughout West Yorkshire.

The investigation found that Birkett had used a tyre-disposal firm without ensuring it was a registered waste carrier.

Magistrates heard that although Birkett had produced paperwork for the disposals, it did not include the full information required by law.

The magistrates gave him credit for his early guilty plea and for co-operating with the Environment Agency investigation.

However, the magistrates said that failing to comply with legislation protecting the environment was not a trivial offence.

After the case, EA protection officer Cathy Bedworth said: "All businesses that produce controlled waste should make it a priority to ensure their waste is passed to an authorised person.

"They should have a fully completed waste- transfer note for the transaction.

"Anything less than that is a neglect of duty."
